I regret to inform you that Marco Troper, the 19-year-old son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, has passed away. The unfortunate incident occurred at UC Berkeley’s Clark Kerr Campus, where Troper, a freshman, was found unresponsive on a Tuesday afternoon, as confirmed by a school spokesperson.
Around 4:23 p.m. local time, following the discovery, the Berkeley Fire Department notified campus police about their initiation of “life-saving measures” on Troper. This information was disclosed in a statement provided to PEOPLE by the University of California Police Department, Berkeley.
Tragically, despite the efforts made by the fire department, Troper was pronounced dead shortly after.
The cause of Marco Troper’s death remains unknown at this time, and campus police have stated that there are no indications of foul play.
Esther Wojcicki, Troper’s grandmother, shared her belief with SFGATE that the Berkeley student may have died from a drug overdose. She mentioned that he had ingested a drug, and the specific substance is yet to be determined. However, she emphasized that it was indeed a drug-related incident.
Esther Wojcicki shared with SFGATE that her grandson, Marco Troper, was characterized as “loving” and a “math genius.” She expressed deep sorrow, describing him as everything one could wish for in a son and grandson, adding that he was destined to make a difference. The loss is truly heartbreaking for the family.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Esther conveyed that she and the entire Troper family are grappling with devastation beyond comprehension.
“In a heartfelt message, Esther Wojcicki expressed that Marco was an incredibly kind, loving, smart, fun, and beautiful individual. He had just embarked on the second semester of his freshman year at UC Berkeley, majoring in math, and was genuinely enjoying his academic journey.
As the author of “How to Raise Successful People,” Esther shared that Marco had built a strong community of friends from his dorm at Stern Hall and his fraternity Zeta Psi, thriving both socially and academically. At home, he would enthusiastically share endless stories about his life and friends at Berkeley.
Esther Wojcicki concluded her heartfelt message by expressing the deep sadness over Marco’s life being cut short, reflecting on the missed opportunities and experiences they would no longer share. She conveyed a profound love for Marco and a sense of loss, stating, “Marco, we all love you and miss you more than you will ever know.”
During an interview with SFGATE, Esther revealed the shared determination among Troper’s loved ones to prevent a similar tragedy from affecting other families. Describing the difficulty of sustaining such a tragedy, she acknowledged the overwhelming emotional toll, expressing that it could make one want to hide away. However, she emphasized the importance of pushing forward to explore ways of helping others, aiming to prevent more young lives from facing a fates imilar to Marco’s.
