Early life and education
Adeyemo was nurtured in Southern California after being born to Yoruba parents in Ibadan, Nigeria. His mother worked as a nurse, and his father was a teacher. His two younger siblings are boys.
He obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2004 and a juris doctorate from Yale Law School in 2009 after leaving Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California, in 1999.

Adeyemo worked for the John Kerry presidential campaign in 2004 as the director of African American outreach, and she was stationed in the San Francisco office.
Adeyemo served as an editor at the Hamilton Project before entering the Obama administration. Adeyemo later worked for Jack Lew in the US Department of the Treasury as senior advisor and deputy chief of staff.
Later, Adeyemo participated in the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. He was also Elizabeth Warren’s first choice to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as its first chief of staff.

Adeyemo received her nomination for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Markets in November 2014 at the same time as Marisa Lago, the current assistant secretary, received her nomination for the position of Deputy United States Trade Representative.
In September 2015, he spoke before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, but the panel did not recommend his candidacy to the full Senate. President Obama withdrew the nomination in December 2015.
Adeyemo was instead chosen in 2015 to hold dual roles as the National Economic Council’s deputy director and deputy national security advisor for international economics, both positions she held until 2016.
