Biography

Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila CFR  is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who was born on June 25, 1962. As of 2019, he has held the position of Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives.

He was chosen to serve as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Chief of Staff in 2023.

Early life and education

Olufemi “Femi” Hakeem Gbajabiamila was born on June 25, 1962, in Lagos, Nigeria, to Lateef and Olufunke Gbajabiamila.

He went to Igbobi College in 1973 to finish his secondary school after attending Mainland Preparatory School for his primary education.

He then registered for his A-Levels at King William’s College on the Isle of Man in the United Kingdom.

The University of Lagos in Nigeria accepted him. In 1983, he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) with honors, and in 1984, he was admitted to the Nigerian bar.

Before starting his own firm, Femi Gbaja & Co., he first worked for Bentley Edu & Co. in Lagos. After passing the Georgia bar exam, he obtained his Juris Doctor from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School in Georgia, USA.

After passing the Georgia bar test in 2001 and opening a law practice in Atlanta, he obtained his Juris Doctor from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School in Georgia, USA. He actively engaged in Bill Campbell’s election as mayor of Atlanta while he was still in the USA.

Political career

Gbajabiamila, who represents Lagos State’s Surulere I seat, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003.

Members of the National Assembly have come under fire from Gbajabiamila for changing parties.

He asserted that a lot of voters occasionally choose candidates based on their party affiliation because they lack the knowledge necessary to make decisions based on each individual’s attitude.

With this in mind, he scolded floppers, saying the result “cannot be anything but negative.”

In the seventh National Assembly, Gbajabiamila served as the minority leader in the House of Representatives.

He served as the chair of the House of Representatives’ special committee that was looking into allegations made by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) regarding debts owing by “Zenon Petroleum & Gas Limited” and “Forte Oil Plc” totaling 140.9 billion naira (around $1 billion).

An investigation into the reported payment was requested by another lawmaker, Bimbo Daramola, who moved that the House form a panel to examine AMCON’s claims that the two businesses owned by Femi Otedola have repaid the government of Nigeria for petroleum products that allegedly were not delivered as specified by the rules of the government’s fuel subsidy program.

If the money had been paid, as Bimbo Daramola suspected, it was “shrouded in secrecy.” With 283 votes, he won the election for speaker of the 9th National Assembly’s House of Representatives, defeating Mohammed Umar Bago, who received 78 votes.

Gbajabiamila showed his genuine interest for issues affecting his constituents and Nigeria as a whole in the House. He worked tirelessly to address issues that were very important to him and quickly established himself as a stunningly effective lawmaker.

He has been chosen to serve the residents of Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos for six consecutive terms in the National Assembly.

Awards

He received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) national honor from President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022.
