Ayuba Wiki

Birth name: Adewale Ayuba

Other name: Mr. Johnson

Date of birth: 6 May 1966

Place of birth: Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria

Genres: World

Occupation(s): Singer-songwriter, drummer, dancer, writer, artist, actor

Early life and education

Adewale Ayuba, also referred to as Ayuba, Mr. Johnson, and the master of the bonsue-fuji, was born in Ikenne Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria, on May 6, 1966.

He began singing as a young child, and by the time he was eight years old, he was performing at fiestas and local musical contests in Ikenne.

After completing his secondary education at Remo Secondary School in Sagamu, Ogun State, he decided to pursue music as a profession.

Even though he had been accepted to the Ogun State Polytechnic in Abeokuta to pursue architecture, his musical career took precedence.

Ayuba quickly rose in the Fuji music scene after releasing his debut record Ibere (Beginning) at the age of 17 in an effort to carve out a niche for himself.

Ayuba secured a recording contract with Sony Music (Nigerian) in early 1990. The album, Bubble, was released in 1991 and helped Ayuba gain recognition on a global scale.

Ayuba received four Artiste of the Year Awards as a result, including the Album of the Year Award, Song of the Year Award, and Best Fuji Album of the Year Awards. With Bubble’s triumph, Ayuba reached the zenith of his career in Nigeria.

The innovative instrumentation and distinctive vocal of Ayuba transformed Fuji Music. The Nigerian Elite, who had up until that point ignored Fuji Music, began to appreciate it for the first time in history.

After Bubble’s success, Ayuba produced the immediately successful Mr. Johnson Play For Me album in 1992, which was also released on the Sony Music Nigeria label.

Ayuba signed with Premier Music (Nigeria) in 1993 before starting his first coast-to-coast journey of West Africa.

Even more renowned than Bubble, it took home numerous honors at the Fame Music honors and topped the charts for several months.

With the goal of “[internationalizing] Fuji Music,” Ayuba made a daring move in 1994 by touring the US and the UK with his ensemble.

While living in the United States in 1995, he made recordings and performed at a number of international events, such as the 1996 Summer State Concerts in New York, the 1996 and 1997 African Mondo Concerts, the 1997 New Orleans Jazz Festival, the 1997 International Festival in Houston, Texas, and the Black Entertainment Television Jazz USA Concert.

Ayuba was given a one-year deal by the US-based Q-disc Record Company, and in 1996 the artist issued Fuji Time on the label.

On the London-based Agogo Music Label, he produced Fuji Dub in 1997.

He returned to Nigeria in 1998, where he put out the commercially successful record Acceleration on the Corporate Music label.

He released a second album in 2000 called Turn Me On, which broke local music standards and won the Best Fuji Album of the Year award at the Nigerian Music Excellence Awards as well as the Best Song of the Year award at the Nigerian Song Festival 2000.

He traveled to a number of European nations in the same year, including England, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

In 2001, he received a colorful celebration at the Ikenne Local Government in Ogun State honoring him as a Distinguished Son of Ikenne Remo, the town where he was born.

Ayuba gave a spectacular show in 2001 at a concert called “The Return of Ayuba” in the banquet hall of the Eko Le Meridien Hotel in Lagos.

The fact that the Executive Governors of Lagos and Ogun state, as well as representatives from the federal and state legislatures, and a number of commissioners, attended this performance helped it become historical in Nigeria.

The media proclaimed Ayuba to be the most commercial Fuji artist ever after this performance.

In 2001, Ayuba and his band also made a trip of Austria, playing in Graz and Vienna. In 2002, he performed in England, France, Belgium, Austria, and the Netherlands during a four-month trip of Europe.

Ayuba recorded another album while on this trip, titled Formula, which won the Best Fuji Album of the Year award at the Nigerian Awards for Musical Excellence in 2002.

Ayuba was awarded the Best Artiste of the Millennium in 2002 by the Music Advertisers Association of Nigeria. Ayuba performed on stage in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Essen, Krefeld, Paris, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Bologna, Naples, Turin, and Genoa during her 2003 European tour.

While on this trip, he collaborated on the album Fuji Satisfaction with the German-based Afro-centric music group Bantu, which went on to win two Kora Music Awards in Durban, South Africa for Best Group in West Africa and Best Group in Africa.

In Düsseldorf, Germany, the Pan-Yoruba Group, Omo Oduduwa Association presented Ayuba with the Millennium Voice of Nigerian Music (domestic and international) award in appreciation for his significant efforts to the development of the music business.

Ijo Fuji (Fuji Dance), which Ayuba published in Nigeria in 2004, also earned her the Entertainer of the Year Award from the Nigerian American Community Association. In July 2005, Ijo Fuji received the Best Fuji Album of the Year Award at the Nigerian Awards for Musical Excellence.

He received the Ogo-irawo award from the Ikenne Development Association in Chicago in 2004 in honor of his commitment to the growth of Ikenne Remo, the city where he was born.

Ayuba’s album Mellow, which was well received after its release and led Nigeria’s contemporary African charts, was named Best Fuji Vocal Performance at the (AMEN) 2007 Awards.

Additionally, Mr. Johnson has a doctorate in the arts in music from Bradley University.

Music Career

As a young kid, Ayuba started singing. Although an amateur singer, his father insisted on his son’s commitment to studying during the week and practicing music on Saturday in order to instill in him the importance of education.

In Nigeria, he has released 15 albums since getting his first record contract in the 1980s. Internationally, he has released four albums.
