Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, a Nigerian businessman, politician, and philanthropist, was born on December 25, 1967. As of May 29, 2019, he is the governor of Oyo State.

He is an engineer and an authority on gas and fluid metering. He serves as the group managing director of Nigeria’s indigenous oil and gas company, Makon Group Ltd.

At the age of 29, in the year 1997, he founded Makon Engineering and Technical Services (METS), his first oil and gas private company, following years of work experience with major oil and gas firms.

Makinde ran for governor of Oyo State in 2015 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform, but he was unsuccessful.

Early Life and Education

Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, a Nigerian businessman, politician, and philanthropist, was born on December 25, 1967. As of May 29, 2019, he is the governor of Oyo State.

Pa Olatubosun Makinde, a former teacher who is now an accountant, and his wife Abigail are from the Aigbofa Compound in Oja’ba, Ibadan, Oyo State, where Makinde was born.

He is the family’s third kid. Makinde attended St. Paul Primary School to start his schooling and St. Michael Primary School in Yemetu, Ibadan, to finish it.

Bishop Phillips Academy in Monatan, Ibadan, served as his secondary school. He was admitted to the University of Lagos (Unilag) in 1985, where he graduated with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering.

Makinde received training on the safety shutdown system in 1998 from Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas, and in 1999 from Lagos Business School (now Pan-Atlantic University) on the development of analytical competence for managing operations.

He received automation training in 2000. At the Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, UK, he studied Foundations of Crude Sampling in 2002.

He also studied Understanding and Solving Complex Business Issues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the United States, in 2005.

Professional and business career

Makinde obtained instruction on the safety shutdown system in 1998 from Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas, and training on the development of analytical competency for managing operations in 1999 from Lagos Business School (now Pan-Atlantic University).

In 2000, he acquired instruction in automation. He studied Fundamentals of Crude Sampling at the Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, United Kingdom, in 2002. In 2005, he also completed coursework at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States on Understanding and Resolving Difficult Business Problems.

Political career

Seyi Makinde ran for the Oyo South Senate seat in 2007 on the ticket of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), but lost to Kamoru Adedibu of the People’s Democratic Party.

Makinde wasn’t deterred after his first failed attempt and in 2010 ran for the Oyo South 2011 Senate seat under the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, but he lost the primary to the current Oyo South Senator.

Makinde ran for governor of Oyo State in 2015 on the People’s Democratic Party’s platform in 2014. (PDP). He was not given the governorship nomination ticket after the party’s primary election in December 2014.

Makinde, on the other hand, stayed true to his aim and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Under the SDP platform, he ran for governor of Oyo State in 2015 but finished third with more than 50,000 votes.

After extensive, in-depth, and wide consultations with national leaders, Oyo State leaders and elders of the Social Democratic Party, and cross sections of strategic partners within Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde returned to his former political party, the People’s Democratic Party, in September 2017 after Senator Ahmed Makarfi, the caretaker national chairman of the PDP, had visited him in Ibadan (PDP).

He insisted that joining the PDP was not done for personal gain but rather for the advancement of the State by addressing the myriad issues it was now confronting.

Makinde won the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primary election at Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado in Ibadan with 2772 votes on September 29, 2018, becoming the party’s nominee for governor of Oyo State in the 2019 general elections.

On March 9, 2019, Makinde received 515,621 votes, defeating Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressive Party who received 357,982 votes, who was his closest competitor.

When the general elections were taking place, the All Progressives Congress (APC). At the 2019 Oyo State gubernatorial elections, which were held on March 9, Makinde won the position of governor.

On May 29, 2019, Makinde took the oath of office as Oyo State’s 28th executive governor. After eight years in office, late Senator Abiola Ajimobi is succeeded by Makinde.

The good people of Oyo State urged Makinde to run for a second term of four years on April 7, 2022, in response to his ground-breaking accomplishments since taking office in 2019. He stated that “if the people of Oyo state desire it, we will serve four more years” in a message uploaded on his social media platforms.
