Alex Otti Bio

Alex Otti is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist, and politician who was born on February 18, 1965. Otti is now the upcoming governor of Nigeria’s Abia State.

The previous Group Managing Director of Nigerian retail banking organization Diamond Bank Plc. Otti stood for governor of Abia State on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) ticket.

On December 31, 2015, the Court of Appeal, located in Owerri, certified Otti the victor of the state’s governorship elections held on April 11 and April 25, ousting incumbent Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic Party.

On February 3, 2016, the Supreme Court of Nigeria overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision and upheld Ikpeazu’s election as governor.

Otti is a member of the editorial board at Thisday and publishes a fortnightly piece called “Outside The Box” every other Monday.

Early life and education

Otti was born in Umuru, Umuehim village in the Ehi Na Uguru Ancient Kingdom, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State, to the late Pastor and Mrs. Lazarus Weze Otti.

He completed his secondary schooling at Okpuala Ngwa Secondary Technical School and Ngwa High School in Aba, both in the state of Abia, where he also placed first in his class on the school certificate exams.

After that, he continued his education at the University of Port Harcourt, where in 1988 he earned an economics degree with first class honors.

In 1994, Otti graduated with an MBA from the University of Lagos.

The Executive Development Programs of the Columbia Business, Stanford Business, and Wharton Business Schools (University of Pennsylvania) are only a few of the foreign courses he has taken.

He also completed an executive program at INSEAD in France’s Fontainebleau.

He received an honorary doctorate from Babcock University in 2009, and the University of Port Harcourt awarded him an honorary doctor of science (D.Sc.) degree in 2012.

He was awarded a second honorary doctorate by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 2013.

Career

Otti started his financial career in 1989 in the operations division of the Nigerian International Bank, a Citibank New York subsidiary. He then transferred to the Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd. at that time.

He had positions at Intercontinental Bank in the corporate banking department as well as the treasury and financial services division.

He began working at Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers), a division of Banque SBA Paris, in 1992 and eventually attained the rank of senior manager.

He then joined the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the principal manager in charge of expanding the bank’s oil and gas business while also heading the corporate banking division for the whole South Division.

He joined First Bank of Nigeria, PLC in May 2001 as assistant general manager, with the express objective of expanding the bank’s Energy Sector.

He received a promotion to deputy general manager in April 2004 and was named executive director, commercial banking, a year later.

After that, he was reclassified as the executive director of the south directorate, with charge of roughly 140 branches spread across the country’s south-south and south-eastern geopolitical zones.

He joined Diamond firm as group managing director and chief executive officer in March 2011 after leaving First Bank Nigeria PLC, and he has since guided the firm through a significant change.

Following the conclusion of his initial term, Diamond Bank extended his contract for an additional three years in March 2014.

Otti retired voluntarily on October 24, 2014, and Uzoma Dozie took over as the new GMD and Bank CEO.
