Ikeoha Foundation Sports Competition begins on Feb. 3 in Enugu
The Coordinator of Ikeoha Sports Competition, Boniface Onovo, says the Senator Ike Ekweremadu Sports Competition will kick-off on Feb. 3, at the Awgu Football Field in Enugu at 3p.m.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday, Onovo said the competition was specifically for people from Enugu West Senatorial Zone.
Onovo said that all the five local government council, Awgu, Ezeagu, Aninri, Udi, and Oji River were all expected to compete in all the sports.
“There will be football competition for boys and girls, handball, basketball and then athletics in the different categories,’’ he said.
The coordinator told NAN that football competition would be on a round robin format in which each team will play each other in terms of home and away.
“Football will start on Feb. 3 and end on Feb. 15 and athletics competition will commence the next day till Feb. 18, for just three days.
“From the preparation so far, our expectations are high because the competition will only feature indigenes from the zone and they will be thoroughly screened.
“We are doing the screening to ensure that only indigenes from the zone will be involved so as to discover raw talents from the zone and the state at the end of the competition,’’ he said.
On sports development in Enugu, Onovo said that the state had been doing wonderfully well and hoped that the momentum would be sustained.
He also said that the preliminary of the Gburugburu Football Competition is ongoing in the six zones of the state.
“At the end of February, the two teams that qualified from the zones for the state finals will slug it out for the Gburugburu football trophy.
“A total of 12 teams are to grace the state final to know the team that will carry the day,’’ Onovo said.
